Fathers’ day

As I look around our church, I feel a real sense of joy to be in the company of so many men who are doing an amazing job as fathers. We honour you today and pray God’s blessing on you as you continue to fulfil this most wonderful God-given role. Inevitably days like today trigger mixed emotions for many of us: grief for those who are no longer with us and maybe disappointments, hurts and regrets. Today is a great day to be reminded that in God we have a good, good father! Here are some examples from scripture as to why we can confidently declare him to be just that.

Psalm 68:5-6 declares that the Lord is ‘a father to the fatherless; defender of widows; God sets the lonely in families’. He fills our voids and deepest longings!

Isaiah 43:4 records God proclaiming to His children, ‘You are precious and honoured in my sight.’

Zephaniah 3:17 proclaims the tenderness of God towards his children, declaring, ‘He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.’

In Luke 15, Jesus uses the parable of the lost son to reveal the father’s heart for those who feel distant. Jesus describes how the prodigal son is so loved that ‘while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion’, and when the son was home a great celebration followed!

In God we have a father who loves us so much that he ultimately sacrificed of himself through the Lord Jesus Christ so that today we can stand in his presence, released, forgiven and justified! He really is a good, good father!
